The coast adds another dimension to a stay at Fronlwyd. Spend an unhurried day on the sand, learn to surf, follow a clifftop path or stroll along a Victorian promenade. From Aberdyfi and Tywyn to Borth, Aberystwyth and New Quay, Cardigan Bay offers plenty of different ways to enjoy the sea.
A favourite seaside day
Set where the Dyfi estuary opens into Cardigan Bay, Aberdyfi combines a broad sandy beach with a small harbour, cafés and views across the water. It is an easy place to spend a whole day without needing a complicated plan.
Walk along the sand, watch boats moving through the estuary, stop for lunch or an ice cream, and stay to see the evening light change over the bay. Conditions around the estuary can be powerful, so always follow local signs and safety advice.

Tywyn’s long sandy beach is well suited to picnics, paddling, sunsets and unhurried walks beside Cardigan Bay. On a changeable day, combine time outdoors with a film, live event or something to eat at the Magic Lantern—the independent venue named BIFA Cinema of the Year in 2025.

Beach, dunes and surfing
Make Borth your base for a relaxed beach day or book a lesson with Aber Adventures, which offers surfing, paddleboarding and equipment hire. Continue north to explore the dunes and estuary landscape at Ynyslas. Please note that Ynyslas is a red-flag beach: swimming and inflatables are not allowed because of strong tidal currents.

Promenade, town and sauna
Walk the promenade from the harbour and castle towards Constitution Hill, stopping for coffee, lunch or an ice cream along the way. At the foot of Constitution Hill, Aberpoeth offers bookable sauna sessions beside the sea. If you plan a dip as well, check conditions carefully and only enter the water where and when it is safe to do so.

A longer coastal day out
Farther south, New Quay’s harbour is a popular starting point for wildlife-watching boat trips. Cardigan Bay holds Britain’s largest resident population of bottlenose dolphins, although dolphins, porpoises and seals may be encountered in different parts of the bay and sightings are never guaranteed. New Quay also has sandy beaches, cafés and coastal views to enjoy.

One of our favourite coastal days
Leave the car in Borth and follow this six-mile, wonderfully scenic and sometimes hilly section of the Wales Coast Path. It passes Clarach before climbing to Constitution Hill and descending into Aberystwyth.
We like to finish with a pre-booked session in the Aberpoeth sauna, perhaps a careful dip in the sea if conditions are suitable, and lunch in town before catching the train back to Borth. Check the weather and return train times before setting out. If the final service would make the day feel rushed, take the train to Borth first and walk back instead.

Conditions can change quickly along Cardigan Bay. Check tide times, weather and local safety information, and follow beach flags and signs. Ynyslas is a red-flag beach where swimming and inflatables are not permitted because of dangerous currents. If entering the sea elsewhere, choose an appropriate location and never assume calm-looking water is risk-free.
