Set where the Dyfi estuary opens into Cardigan Bay, Aberdyfi combines a broad sandy beach with a small harbour, cafés and views across the water. It is an easy place to spend a whole day without needing a complicated plan.
Walk along the sand, watch boats moving through the estuary, stop for lunch or an ice cream, and stay to see the evening light change over the bay. Conditions around the estuary can be powerful, so always follow local signs and safety advice.
Pair the beach with an award-winning cinema, try a surf lesson, explore a university town or travel farther south in search of dolphins.
Tywyn’s long sandy beach is well suited to picnics, paddling, sunsets and unhurried walks beside Cardigan Bay. On a changeable day, combine time outdoors with a film at the Magic Lantern. This much-loved independent venue was named Cinema of the Year at the 2025 British Independent Film Awards.

There are beaches on both sides of the castle headland, independent shops and plenty of places to linger. Explore the promenadeFarther south, New Quay’s harbour is a popular starting point for wildlife-watching boat trips. Cardigan Bay holds Britain’s largest resident population of bottlenose dolphins, although dolphins, porpoises and seals may be encountered in different parts of the bay and sightings are never guaranteed. New Quay also has sandy beaches, cafés and coastal views to enjoy before or after a trip.
View New Quay boat tripsThis six-mile section of the Wales Coast Path follows a wonderfully scenic and sometimes hilly route above Cardigan Bay, passing Clarach before reaching Constitution Hill and Aberystwyth.
A simple way to make it a one-way walk is to leave the car in Aberystwyth, take the train to Borth and walk back into town. Check the weather, route conditions and train times before setting out; the coast is exposed and services may not be frequent.
Plan coast-path transportConditions can change quickly along Cardigan Bay. Check tide times, weather and local safety information, and follow beach flags and signs. Ynyslas is a red-flag beach where swimming and inflatables are not permitted because of dangerous currents. If entering the sea elsewhere, choose an appropriate location and never assume calm-looking water is risk-free.
After a day on the sand, beside the harbour or walking above Cardigan Bay, return to Fronlwyd for a quiet evening and a soak in your private wood-fired hot tub.
