Seriously dark skies, in plain English

Fronlwyd sits beneath an estimated Bortle Class 3 sky, with a mapped sky-quality figure of around 21.86 mag/arcsec². For guests, that simply means very little artificial glow and far more stars than most people see at home.

For keen stargazers, these figures point to a rural sky capable of revealing far fainter detail when conditions are clear.

These are modelled light-pollution readings rather than a promise of nightly conditions. Moonlight, cloud, haze and local lights all affect what can be seen.

The designated viewing point at the Y Star Inn car park is an officially recognised Dark Sky Discovery Site. Its mountain setting and open outlook make it a memorable destination on a clear night. Make an evening of it with a meal at the pub first, then step outside to watch the stars as the sky darkens.

A few useful tips

Check the cloud forecast as well as the general weather forecast; even a short clear window can be rewarding.
Let your eyes adjust to the darkness for around 20 minutes and keep phone screens dim or use a red-light setting.
Bring warm layers, sturdy footwear, a torch and a flask—clear nights can feel cold even after a warm day.
Explore unfamiliar viewpoints in daylight first. Rural roads are narrow and mountain conditions can change quickly.
Park considerately, keep noise low and never block gates or access. Leave wildlife and the darkness undisturbed.
