Not every good day needs to be enormous

These ideas range from an accessible lakeside walk and playground to a full adventure day in Eryri. Drive times are approximate, rural roads take longer than mileage suggests, and opening arrangements can change. Pick one main experience, leave room for snacks and weather, and remember that an afternoon back at the Longhouse can be part of the holiday too.

Each combines places that work naturally together rather than sending you racing between attractions.

An easier nature day

Red kites, lake trail and play

At Bwlch Nant yr Arian, red kites are fed beside the lake every day at 2pm. The 0.8-mile Barcud Trail is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs, and there are separate play areas for toddlers and older children.

Take a picnic or check the current cold-food provision before travelling. The trails, play areas and toilets remain available, but catering arrangements have changed.

Steam train and waterfall

Talyllyn Railway & Dolgoch Falls

Ride the historic narrow-gauge railway from Tywyn and build the day around a stop for Dolgoch Falls. The combination of train, woodland and cascades gives children variety without requiring a long mountain walk.

Check the day’s timetable carefully before choosing where to leave the train and how long you will have for the falls.

Beach and train day

Borth, Aberystwyth or Tywyn

Choose Borth for sand and a surf lesson, Aberystwyth for the promenade and cliff railway, or Tywyn for beach time followed by the Magic Lantern cinema. Older children may enjoy the six-mile Borth-to-Aberystwyth coast walk and train return.

The bigger adventure drive

Zip World in Eryri

Bounce Below at Llechwedd fills a former slate cavern with enormous suspended nets. At Betws-y-Coed, the Fforest Coaster and treetop activities offer a different kind of thrill.

The sites are separate. Check ages, heights and other restrictions, book ahead and choose one main destination rather than trying to fit in everything.

Wildlife and wetland

Dyfi Wildlife Centre

Follow the boardwalk through Cors Dyfi, use the centre’s live screens and viewing facilities, and learn about the Dyfi Osprey Project. Allow one to three hours and check the seasonal opening information before setting out.

Dogs are not allowed in the centre or reserve except assistance dogs.

When Wales supplies the rain

Cinema, galleries and something good to eat

Start in Machynlleth with MOMA’s seven galleries and a café stop, or head to Tywyn for the Magic Lantern—BIFA Cinema of the Year 2025—with films, live events and food delivered to your seat.

Check programmes before leaving. A wet morning followed by a clear afternoon can still leave time for the beach, a short forest walk or an early return to the hot tub.
